A you couple approached Monarch looking to build a flexible house addition that could be easily used as a separate rentable unit. This attached, informal ADU has an entrance on the back side of the house in addition to an internal connection via a shared utility room. With this configuration, the added space makes the perfect suite for grandparents visiting on extended stays or renting out that portion of the home. As their family grows, the owners may opt to renovate the existing kitchen and merge it with the new kitchenette to create a larger kitchen / dining space. The added bedroom could then be occupied as the primary bedroom, so that the children could each have a bedroom as they grow. The west-facing roof facade extends as part of the home addition, allowing a larger potential west-facing solar array (indicated with blue dashed lines in the plan).
